Secrets

Rostand, Rostand, Rostand !

Rostand Pokam

Born in Yaoundé, Cameroon, in 1984, Rostand Pokam is a Cameroonian painter who lives and works in Douala, Cameroon.

He holds a Master’s degree in the History of African Arts from the University of Yaoundé I. His passion for fine arts began to take shape at the end of secondary school. Although he had promising prospects in mathematics, he chose to pursue his studies at the Institute of Fine Arts in Balmayo, Cameroon.

Rostand Pokam is an independent visual artist. Although he grew up watching his father, Kouam Tawadje, paint, he has developed his own distinctive style and artistic signature. “Learning every day” is his motto, which he embodies through participation in various workshops and residencies, including: AtWork Douala 2017, organised by the Moleskine Foundation and led by Simon Njami; a Digital Photography Workshop organised by the Spanish Embassy in Cameroon (2010); and Art for Art – Reason of Art, led by Prof. Vera Bourgeois and organised by the Goethe-Institut (2006).

His work lies between Impressionism and Fauvism. He paints and depicts the realities of his environment from his own perspective. Through a descriptive and sociological approach, his sketches and vibrant colours express his imaginative vision, constantly questioning notions of representation and presentation, contrast and balance, in an ongoing renewal of his pictorial exploration.

He has participated in over twenty group and solo exhibitions in Cameroon and internationally, including:
2017: group exhibitions at the World Bank (Yaoundé, Cameroon); the National Museum of Cameroon (Yaoundé); and Galerie Carole Kvasnevski (Paris, France).
2016: Cot’Art and Festi’Art Kribi (Cameroon).
2015: represented Cameroon at the Universal Art Exhibition in Venice, Italy.
2014: Novotel Hotel, N’Djamena, Chad.
2013: Aurora Picture Show Studio, Houston, and exhibitions in Austin, Texas, USA; French Institute.
2008: United States Embassy.
2005: National Museum of Cameroon; British Council.
