The Real Selfie

Our theme being can revolution be a whisper, my thought process during the ideation of the piece was exploring some of the most significant moments of my life that have made me who i am. I view those moments as various types of revolutions. Some big some small. These moments are captured via artwork and a piece of poetry that I felt best described my feelings in those moments, some of the moments are captured simply in questions or thoughts I have had over the years. Some of them were hard to live through and some were easy. Some of them required far much more from me than I thought I had. Some took and some gave. Either way all have been moments were I’ve been tested and have learnt something. They range from love, death, depression, broken friendships, sexuality, spirituality and religion. Through these moments I have grown to become the person I am today. I can’t say they’ve made me become a perfect person but I’m in a far much better place than I was after I graduated from college. I would say the entire piece is a short breakdown of my revolution as a person. Through the regrets, disappointment, cynicism, pain, heartbreak, fear, panic, numbness has been joy, laughter, happiness, love, realisation, acceptance and freedom. Each chapter is titled after a song, book, album or movie that had profound effect on my life and that I related to immensely. Being more of a writer than an artist I think words have always been easier for me to use than anything else. Despite it all I am still discovering myself and still becoming.

Nothando Majoni

My name is Nothando Majoni and I am a writer and screenwriter. I’ve loved many things in life, reading, art, tennis, hockey, and hiking. Some of these things I grew out of them and some my love for them has waned. Yet for as long as I could remember writing is a passion that has constantly consumed me. It is a passion that has led me to dedicate my time and life to. And it is a passion that demands constant growth in whatever way I can make it happen. It is a passion that thirsts and hungers for more knowledge and expansion to become better and greater. Every opportunity I get that can possibly make me a better writer, I grab and hold on to as tightly as possible. This workshop is one of those opportunities. I would like to be considered for this workshop because it is a chance to meet other creatives and learn from others. To be a good writer one has to be willing to open themselves up to different opinions, views and to expose themselves to different backgrounds. The ability to create whole, complex and intelligent characters comes from allowing oneself to reflect on the different backgrounds, lives and experiences that others have endured.
